Role of Education in the Upliftment of Socio-Economic Status of Deuri Tribal Women (A case study in two Deuri villages of Lakhimpur district in Assam)

The Deuri is one of the indigenous tribes of Assam and constitute on important ethnic group in North-East India. They belong to the Indo-Mongoloid race and the Tibeto-Burman linguistic family. The socio-economic status is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person’s work experience and of an individual’s or family’s economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. Like in any other patriarchal society, the quality of life of women in Deuri society is also determined by the socio-economic, religious and cultural factors. The Deuri women have been playing crucial role to ensure sound society as equal as that of male counterpart. Deuri women are also very hard workers and are experts in many fields like agriculture, piggery, poultry, weaving and fishing. They are not lagging behind in any activities than their male counterpart. They are playing a vital role in the income sustenance of their families. Thus, they are more significant contributed the economic development of the family and the society. In spite of their contribution to society and economy they are facing the various problems due to lack of proper education. So, education of women is essential for emancipation of women from the social evils that lie in age-old traditions and customs. An educated and socially and economically developed women normally found to be efficient, aware of happening around her and capable of taking decision. The aim of this paper is to make an investigation about the role of education in the upliftment of socio-economic status of Deuri tribal women in the village.
